That does look majorly complicated, but that gives me an idea... you could get a similar aesthetic by splitting the existing gores in a corset into horizontal stripes/triangles for more interest.
I think those are just made of the basic up-down pieces, with a bust gusset and a hip gusset, then some flappy bits (technical term, there) that fold in toward the front.
I'm sewing my way through every corset pattern in Norah Waugh's book, Corsets and Crinolines. When I complete this challenge I hope to be able to say, "yeah, I can sew," and "yeah, I know a bit about corsets." Here's how the project began, and here are the ground rules.
