thread

A rainbow of possibilities, that is what a storage container of thread is. I love Gütermann threads, but lately, when I need to pick up a new spool I've been searching out Mettler. I could be imagining, but the Mettler seems slightly smoother. Has anyone else noticed a difference between the two?

  1. I just read a blog entry posted today by Gertie that came to the same conclusion. Great minds thinking alike.

  2. Definitely! A few years ago, I picked up one of those big Gütermann displays that go on sale at JoAnn's every now and then, and I found that thread from it tended to leave quite a lot of thread "dust" on top of my machine in addition to not pulling through fabric so smoothly. I've been opting for Mettler lately, too, and find it to be cleaner and smoother.

  3. Ha ha. That's funny that Gertie and I both have been mulling over threads. Great minds indeed.

Thread dust. Yes! Thanks for mentioning that Abby. I can't even imagine what the dust must be like from lessser quality threads.

  4. I have mostly Mettler threads, although I'll confess that that is just because the stand was the only thread stand in the store. But I rather like them.

  5. I've preferred Mettler for this reason for about 5 years! They're harder to find where I live but it's worth hunting them down.

  7. My mom, who runs a quilt store, told me a couple of years ago that the quality of Gutterman has dropped quite a bit in the last ten years. I use Mettler for colors and Aurifil (http://www.aurifil.com/) for my basics like cream and black. The Aurifil is especially good for my 1890's treadle machine, because most of the treadles are made to handle much thinner, finer thread and Aurifil is very thin and fine.

  9. Hi, I was wondering how you store your threads - your container in the picture is just the sort of storage I'm looking for. Can you share any details of the container? Dimensions, compartments, brand? TIA.
