We'll start sewing, or rather patterning, Monday, January 2, 2012. In the weeks leading up to our start date I'll post a list of the supplies needed, a schedule, and some inspirational images. If you can recommend anything else I can do to help everyone prepare please let me know. I'm looking forward to sewing with you!
This will be so much fun! If you can do a supply list soon(ish), that would be lovely as some of us need to mail order everything!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Noelle
Woot, I so need one of these corsets, so yep, I'm joining in!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I hope I can get everything arranged to get on board with this! I want a teens corset to make a lingerie dress outfit.
ReplyDeleteI've just started your 1911 corset on my own...I won't have time to mail order any more supplies before 2nd January though so are they the same as the supply list in the foundations revealed article???
ReplyDeletea corset sew along is a lovely idea!
Just a question... I'm curvy. Oh, so curvy!
ReplyDeleteWill it fit me?
Giulia
Hi, this'll be my first corset! I have some fabric I've wanted to make a corset with for aaaaages. But I've never made one before- so you might need to explain things you think are self-evident.
ReplyDeleteAlso... how do you sit down in one of those puppies?
ReplyDeleteI have been following your hard work for a while and may I say how generous of you to take us along this project! I will be tuning in from Europe on the 2nd ...with a little time difference. Thanks again for making us fans (and humble beginners) come together in this way! I can't wait to get started!
ReplyDeleteYea! It's fun to see so many participating!
ReplyDeleteMunichjoolz, yes, the supply list for the post edwardian in Foundations Revealed will be the same one for the Corsets and Crinolines 1911.
Jenny Wren, you'll sit straight! The boning in the front of the corset ends just below the waist, and the steels at the back end before the bottom edge of the corset so they should not hit the seat of a chair. And thanks for the tip! I'll make certain to explain things may be obvious to me but not to a first time corset maker.
Anonymous, there is still a nicely defined waist in this pattern so during the pattern alteration phase you can just add a bit more curve if needed.
What a great idea! I'm currently hosting a Downton Abbey sew-along (http://star-spangledheart.blogspot.com/2011/12/dressing-downton-sew-along.html) and I'll definitely be sharing this on my blog! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Stephanie! This corset is perfect for Downton Abbey attire. I can't wait for season 3!
ReplyDeleteI'm in! How fantastic, I've been wanting to make a corset of this era for a long time :)
ReplyDeletePerhaps a stupid question, but do you use a specific pattern for this sew along? I would love to make my own, but don't know if I have enough time.
ReplyDeleteHello Jos, there are two pattern options and one of them is a free pattern that I drafted for Foundations Revealed. I'll be posting pattern info and links later this afternoon!
ReplyDeleteXXL as well? :)
ReplyDeleteBoth patterns will need to be altered to your size, but that will be the first thing we'll tackle together.
ReplyDeleteI needed to make one of these anyway for an event next year, so way not join the sew along.
ReplyDeleteNice to have you on board Athena!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a fun project! I'd love to join...
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful project. Very impressive planning. This would be fabulous for a Titanic event in April. I look forward to seeing how you work with single layers -- museum examples are lovely, but how do they hold together and still mold the body? I also need guidance on sizing up to a modern 20W, and placing bones where they won't kill me before the evening ends.
ReplyDeleteHello Dani C, The layers are stitched together with reinforced seams so they don't split under stress. It works! The first thing we'll do together is size up the pattern, and I'll discuss bone placement too. I hope you sew along!
ReplyDeleteI feel very excited, I checked all my sewing stuff and ready to start!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're joining us Max!
ReplyDeleteOf course I'm! I'm a big fan of Titanic and it's grand and sad history. And it's a very-very suitable chance to combine my two true passions - Titanic and corsetry. Hope I won't stop on the underwear and move to a complite costume or even dress. Yesterday I spent the whole evening researching Worth's opulent gowns. there's miles to go so I'd better start right now
ReplyDeleteOMG I want to join! Yay! Perfect timing! I was just thinking about making one of these yesterday, but then figured I'd need a "push" to get it done...this is PERFECT! YAY!
ReplyDeleteEven though I wasn't going to squeeze Edwardian into my schedule for a couple years, I think I'm going to do this since I have such problems patterning and fitting corsets :)
ReplyDeleteGlad to have sewing along with us Trish and Verdaera!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to this! Love the shape of an edwardian corset and don't have one in my collection - yet ;)
ReplyDeleteSuper idea! I'm ready to start:)
ReplyDeleteI would like to join! Can't wait to start! :D
ReplyDeleteThere is a 1911 corset pattern in Norah Waugh's book Corsets and Crinolines. Fran www.lavoltapress.com
ReplyDeleteIs the sew along already underway? I'd like very much to join in if so, or get ready if not.
ReplyDeleteWe are well under way. In fact, we're at the finishing stages. But do join in! The information will still be here and if you have a question along the way I'll be happy to help.
Deleteanyone know where I can get Warner's Corset Model 1910?
ReplyDeletethanks
