historical costume playing cards

I've been away for way too long. I did make eyelet progress using the eyelet-a-lunch plan. But then my lunch breaks started being used to meet with advisors, or write papers, or work in the studio. The good news is my thesis work is underway and, even though it not is at all corset related, I'll share images once I take some.

I do have something fun to share that is costume related, a deck of playing cards with images from the Kent State University's collection!

This has been a pet project of mine and I'm so happy with the finished deck. Fifty two pictures of beautiful gowns from all eras, details of intricate bead and ribbon work, and a couple of corsets too. When I see my family over the holidays I'm going to force them to play card games with me.

I'm also bringing the 1650s bodice with me so I can make more of a dent in those eyelets. What are your holiday sewing plans?

  1. Agreed!! Those are some AWESOME cards! Where are they being sold??

And it is good to see you back. I was worried for a week or so there that you had fallen off the face of the earth...

    1. Not off the face of the earth, just off the blogosphere for a bit. I hadn't realized so much time had passed until I went to post. Yikes! The cards are being sold in the museum gift shop. Are you in Northeast Ohio? If so do stop by!

    2. I'll be nowhere near Ohio in the foreseeable future. But I would LOVE to get one or a couple of those decks for friends and of course for myself.

      Is that possible??

  4. Thanks for sharing about the cards! I've been handsewing 18th century stays and the eyelets were quickly done...but sewing on the binding is next and perhaps to be labored over the holidays during Christmas movies at night. Then when my daughter goes to bed I am 21st century sewing for her for Christmas gifts. I've been so busy sewing costumes that I have to do present day sewing now. I will be researching your blog as I start costuming for our 19th century history studies.

  6. Having to make my NY-eve corset: Black coutil coveres in two types of lace and 3 colors of rhinestones. Very Sparklewren-ish:)
But have to do it, while hosting christmas eve for the first time, -so lots of new chores to handle first!
